Download & install

Start with the official AppHalt download.

Use the latest DMG from the AppHalt website, then install it like a regular Mac app.

How do I install AppHalt?

Download the DMG, open it, drag AppHalt to Applications, then launch AppHalt. Look for the AppHalt icon in your menu bar.

Download AppHalt

I downloaded AppHalt but cannot find it.

Check your Downloads folder, browser download list, and Applications folder. If needed, download the latest DMG again from the official AppHalt website.

macOS says AppHalt was downloaded from the internet.

That message is a normal macOS safety prompt for downloaded apps. Only install AppHalt from the official AppHalt website.

AppHalt does not appear in the menu bar.

Confirm AppHalt is in Applications, open it again, and check the top-right area of your Mac menu bar. If your menu bar is crowded, try closing other menu bar items temporarily.

Pause & resume

Pausing is not the same as quitting.

AppHalt is designed to pause apps without closing their windows, documents, or tabs.

Does AppHalt quit my apps?

No. AppHalt pauses selected apps. Their windows stay open so you can resume them when needed.

Can I lose unsaved work?

Pausing is not Force Quit, but it is still smart to save critical work before pausing apps that hold unsaved documents.

How do I resume a paused app?

Open AppHalt from the menu bar and resume the app. The app should become active again from where it was paused.

Why does an app still seem active?

Some apps, background agents, or system processes behave differently depending on macOS and how the app manages background work.

Is this the same as Force Quit?

No. Force Quit closes an app. AppHalt is for pausing and resuming apps while keeping your workspace open.

Smart Sleep Mode

Let AppHalt help with forgotten background apps.

Smart Sleep Mode is part of AppHalt Pro. It can help pause apps left unused while keeping protected apps alone.

What is Smart Sleep Mode?

Smart Sleep Mode helps handle apps that sit unused in the background. You stay in control of what should be protected.

How do I protect important apps?

Use exclusions or protected apps for tools that should not be paused automatically, such as communication, sync, or active work apps.

What should I add to exclusions?

Add apps you rely on constantly, apps handling live work, or apps that behave differently when paused.

What are groups for?

Groups help you manage repeated workflows, such as pausing several chat or browser apps together when you switch focus.

Safety and scope

A Mac utility, not a cleaner.

AppHalt does not delete files, uninstall apps, clean caches, scan malware, or repair macOS.

Is AppHalt a Mac cleaner?

No. AppHalt helps you pause and resume apps. It does not clean files or create fake system health scores.

Does AppHalt work with every Mac app?

AppHalt works with many regular macOS apps. Some apps, background agents, or system processes may behave differently.

Will AppHalt make my Mac faster?

AppHalt can help reduce background activity by pausing apps you are not using. The effect depends on your Mac, your apps, and what is running.
